Volkswagen sales fell 8.1% in 2021

Volkswagen vehicle shipments fell 8.1% in 2021 to just under 4.9 million vehicles due to significant supply chain shortcomings, the automaker said on Wednesday. The situation is expected to remain volatile in the first half of 2022.

The automaker said shipments of all-electric or hybrid vehicles were up 73% from 2020 to more than 369,000 vehicles, representing 7.5% of total shipments worldwide.

“In an unusually challenging environment, Volkswagen has achieved satisfactory sales results,” said Sales and Marketing Director Klaus Zellmer. “However, the huge impact of chips on manufacturing has not been fully offset.”
