Spotify expands the capabilities of AI DJ

09.08.2023

Spotify announced Tuesday that it is expanding its use of DJ’s artificial intelligence in select markets around the world.

The DJ acts as a personalized guide for users. The AI DJ will play songs based on listeners’ history and make new suggestions.

Spotify launched the feature in the US and Canada in February. In May, the company made AI DJ available to listeners in the UK and Ireland.

Spotify says the feature is now available in dozens more countries in Asia and Africa, as well as other regions.

The DJ’s voice is based on that of Spotify’s head of cultural partnerships Xavier “X” Jernigan.

The Swedish company said listeners are “more willing to try something new (or listen to a song they might otherwise skip)” when they hear commentary alongside personalized recommendations.

“As we take DJ into new markets, we see users tuning into DJ even more, with fans spending nearly a third of their time with DJ,” Spotify said.

For now, DJ AI is only available in English.
