Russia began to invest less in America’s national debt

20.01.2021

In November 2020, Russia sharply reduced its investments in the US national debt. This is evidenced by the data of the US Treasury Department.

Russia has cut investments in government bonds by more than 19 percent – to 4.968 billion dollars. The short-term bonds, which are held by Russia, are valued at $3.4 billion. Long-term bonds are $1.568 billion. A month before that, in October, the Russian side increased its investments in American securities.

Russia is not among the largest holders of the US government debt. It began to cut US government bond holdings sharply in 2018.
Previously, they amounted to $96 billion. Most of all US government bonds are concentrated in the hands of Japan ($ 1.26 trillion), China (1.063 trillion) and the UK (420.3 billion).
