Google hires former BlockFi cryptocurrency executive for Web3

Rishi Ramchandani, who was BlockFi’s vice president for Asia from June 2020 to the current month, is taking over as APAC Web3 Lead at Google, according to his LinkedIn profile as well as a social media post from Mitesh Agarwal, a Google managing director who focuses on cloud clients, partner engineering and Web3-related work.

Google Cloud aims to build a Web3 ecosystem that includes companies that want to build new Web applications on blockchain technology by supporting the development, transaction, storage and deployment of new products, a company spokesman said in an e-mail last month. The company’s clients include leading cryptocurrency and Web3-related companies, including Coinbase Global Inc, Dapper Labs Inc, Sky Mavis Inc, Nansen and Hedera, the spokesman said.

BlockFi filed for bankruptcy last month after the rapid collapse of Sam Bankman-Fried’s empire, which includes the FTX exchange and the Alameda Research trading floor. The company sold about $239 million worth of cryptocurrencies and warned nearly 250 employees that they would lose their jobs in the run-up to the event. An attorney for BlockFi said the company will try to get about $680 million owed to it from part of the failed Bankman-Fried crypto universe.
