China sets Marvel release dates after three-year absence

18.01.2023

China has set release dates for upcoming Marvel films in 2023, ending a de facto ban on the films for the past few years.

“Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” and “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” both received February release dates in China – the former a few months after its global release, the latter a day-ahead with the North American release.

Beijing has been known to limit the number of foreign films shown in Chinese theaters to 34 per year, excluding co-productions.

The two films will be the first that Marvel will release in China since Avengers: Endgame in 2019. Chinese regulators never explained the reasons for denying the other films, which included Eternal, Thor: Love and Thunder, and Zhang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, but leading speculation focused on possible political violations by certain creators or censorship violations in specific films.
