Riots in El Salvador over Bitcoin

09.09.2021

Those who disagree with the recognition of bitcoin as an official method of payment protested in the capital of El Salvador. People rebelled over the risks of financial instability and possible illegal transactions.

More than a thousand protesters gathered outside the Supreme Court in San Salvador after the law on recognizing bitcoin as the national currency came into force. As a sign of disagreement, the Salvadorans burned tires and set off fireworks. “The Bitcoin law was approved in parliament without any debate. It took only about five hours to pass it,” said opposition politician Wright Sol, who spoke out against the cryptocurrency’s acceptance.
