Brazilian lender Itau launches cryptocurrency trading

04.12.2023

Brazilian bank Itau Unibanco on Monday launched a cryptocurrency trading service for customers of its investment platform, making the country’s biggest lender the latest local player to enter the digital asset exchange market.

Initially, Itau’s new service will allow trading of bitcoin, the most popular cryptocurrency, as well as ether, but the lender intends to add others later, Guto Antunes, head of digital assets, said in an interview.

The move puts Itau in competition in Brazil with other local companies such as crypto exchange MB and investment bank BTG Pactual’s digital assets unit Mynt, as well as global giants such as Binance.

According to Antunes, Itau claims it will stand out from its competitors because it also acts as a custodian, safeguarding users’ assets.

The move comes about a month after two local players announced their withdrawal from the cryptocurrency market.

Brokerage and investment firm XP did not disclose the reasons for closing its crypto service, while financial firm PicPay, owned by conglomerate J&F, which also controls meatpacker JBS, cited regulatory uncertainty.
