Kraken will start sharing some users’ data with the IRS

30.10.2023

Cryptocurrency exchange Kraken has announced that it has complied with a court order requiring it to provide data on tens of thousands of its users to the US Internal Revenue Service (IRS).

Details of cryptocurrency transactions over $20,000 made by Kraken customers between 2016 and 2020 will be provided.

Users in the US who participated in these transactions will have their account history, as well as personal information such as name, date of birth, TIN, address and contact details, shared with the IRS.

The court ruling, which was obtained in June after a two-year legal battle, affects 42,017 Kraken accounts. Kraken calls the implementation of the court’s ruling a victory for privacy advocates, emphasising that the company successfully resisted onerous demands from the IRS for additional personal data. Previously, Coinbase, Circle and other companies had been subjected to similar data transfer demands.
