Spanish football giant FC Barcelona has teamed up with the NFT World of Women project for the second edition of the 10-part Masterpieces collection, which artistically highlights the achievements of legendary players past and present.

The digital artwork, titled Empowerment, created by artist Ree Madeline, is dedicated to women’s club captain Alexia Putellas and “symbolises transformation and a catalyst for progress”.

The gold-embellished painting depicts Putellas during the women’s Champions League semi-final against German club Wolfsburg in 2022 – a game in which she scored a brace (two goals) and led her team to victory.

The two-day auction for Empowerment will begin on 26 June exclusively through the OpenSea trading platform. The NFT’s physical utility – which is mined on Ethereum by Polygon’s scalable network – includes the chance to meet Putellas, as well as the chance to bid for a signed pair of boots and a physical seat at Barcelona’s stadium called Spotify Camp Nou, signed by the player.

She detailed the decision to partner with Barcelona, the project’s desire to support the growth of female representation in the game, and why Putellas is the inspirational figure to realise such ambitions.
