MetaMask will not withhold your cryptocurrencies for taxes

22.05.2023

ConsenSys, creator of the popular browser-based crypto wallet MetaMask, spoke out against “tweets spreading inaccurate information about ConsenSys’ terms of service,” officially stating that MetaMask does not charge taxes on cryptocurrency transactions, and we have not made any changes to our terms of service to do so.

The tax section in our terms of service refers to the “fees and charges” section, and it applies solely to products and fee plans offered by ConsenSys. The legal terminology can be complicated, but it is critical to emphasize that this section does not apply to MetaMask or any other products that do not provide for sales tax.

The company responded to a number of Twitter posts highlighting section 4.2 of MetaMask’s terms of use, describing it as a change that would allow the company to withhold taxes. The statement quickly spread to r/CryptoCurrency on Reddit, where it has already garnered 450 upvotes and more than 500 comments, on several crypto news sites and on YouTube.
