Paper money in Russia will look different

07.07.2021

Deputy Chairman of the Central Bank Alekseev told how paper money will change, what will be depicted on it, what protection has been added and when the cash will go out of circulation.

A large-scale update of paper money was required due to the appearance of bills of 200 and 2,000 rubles that differ from the main mass, Alekseev explained. The new banknotes will be made in their style with the image of Russian cities and a slight difference in color from the current ones. The Central Bank also intends to introduce a number of innovations, including the replacement of the banknote numbering system. “The serial number in the banknotes of the new modification will be unique, not repeated in banknotes of other denominations,” he said.

The consumer properties of the new money will improve: banknotes will become more resistant to pollution, they will be better processed by counting and sorting machines and ATMs. Banknotes of small denomination (10, 50 rubles) will be coated with a protective composition, varnishing to extend their service life.
