China will hold a lottery and distribute 40 million yuan ($6.2 million) to Beijing residents in digital currency, according to data from the Bureau of Local Financial Supervision and Administration.

Through mobile banking applications, Beijing residents will be able to participate in the drawing of 200,000 so-called red envelopes, each containing 200 yuan in digital currency. It will be possible to spend money in certain stores, and participants must register before June 7.

China has yet to introduce the use of the digital yuan at the national level, but in the meantime, the country is conducting experiments and organizing lotteries in different cities.
