US national debt is set to rise to record soon

05.03.2021

The US national debt in 2021 will be a record since the Second World War and will double in the next 30 years, predicts the Congressional Budget Office (CBO).

According to experts, this year the national debt will amount to 102 percent of GDP, and by 2051 it will soar to 202 percent of GDP. Meanwhile, the CBO did not take into account the $1.9 trillion budgetary spending plan, which is currently being considered by Congress.

The risk of a fiscal crisis in the short term is low, the report says. The country’s budget deficit, according to CBO estimates, will decrease to 10.3 percent this year (from 14.9 percent of GDP in 2020), and in 2051 it will become 13.3 percent. The average rate of economic growth in the United States from 2021 to 2051 will be 1.8 percent per year, although before that the country’s economy increased by an average of 3.1 percent.
